Inmate Money

Every state correctional institution has a Commissary which serves to provide a bank type account for prisoner funds and for buying items not provided by the Bureau of Prisons.

How to Send an Inmate Money

Family, friends, or other sources may add money into these Commissary accounts by sending it by Western Union or by mail.

Via U.S. Postal Service: An inmate’s family and friends can choose to send inmates money through postal mail and must send the moneyh to this address and do so in accordance with the steps given below:

The money must be a money order that is made out to the prisoner’s full committed name and complete eight-digit register number. You should use a postal money order, since all non-postal money orders processed through the National Lockbox will be kept for a 15-day hold period, in which the prisoner will not get the funds. The Bureau of Prisons will return any funds that do not have appropriate prisoner info provided the envelope has a return address. Personal checks and cash will not be deposited so do not send any cash or checks.
