Inmate Money

Each state prison has a Commissary which was started to provide inmates a bank type account for inmate monies and for buying things not issued by the correctional facility.

How to Send an Inmate Money

Anyone can add money to these accounts by sending it by Western Union or by mail.

Via U.S. Postal Service: Inmates’ families and friends can choose to send inmates money by way of postal mail and must send those funds to the address below and follow the policies listed below:

The funds have to be in a money order made out to the prisoner’s full committed name and complete eight-digit register number. It is best if you use a postal money order, since all non-postal money orders processed through the National Lockbox will be kept for a 15-day hold, and in this time the inmate will not get the money. The Bureau of Prisons will return to the sender money orders that do not have correct prisoner information if the envelope you sent it in has an adequate return address. Personal checks and cash cannot be deposited to the prisoner’s account so do not send any cash or checks.
