Inmate Money

Every state correctional institution has a Commissary that was started to provide a bank account for inmate money and for purchasing things not issued to inmates by the correctional facility.

How to Send an Inmate Money

Friends, family, or other people can deposit money to prisoner’s accounts using the U.S. Postal Service and Western Union.

Via U.S. Postal Service: An inmate’s family and friends are able to send prisoners funds in the postal service and must send those funds to the following address and follow the rules listed below:

The funds have to be a money order made out to the prisoner’s full committed name and complete eight-digit register number. You are advised to use a post office money order, since all non-postal money orders that are processed through the National Lockbox will be placed on a 15-day hold, during which the inmate will not have access to the funds. The Bureau of Prisons will return to the sender funds that do not have valid inmate info but only if the envelope it was sent it has a return address. Cash and checks won’t be accepted for deposit so don’t send checks or cash.
