Inmate Money

Each state correctional institution has a Commissary which was created to provide an account for inmate funds and for buying items not issued regularly by the correctional facility.

How to Send an Inmate Money

Friends, family, or other people can deposit money to these Commissary accounts using Western Union or by mail.

Via U.S. Postal Service: Inmates’ families and friends can choose to send inmates funds through the mail and must send it to the following address and do so in accordance with the steps written below:

The funds must be in the form of a money order that is made out to the inmate’s full committed name and complete eight-digit register number. It is best if you use a U.S. Postal Service money order, since all non-postal money orders that are processed through the National Lockbox will be subject to a 15-day holding period, and during this period the prisoner will not have access to the depsoit. The Bureau of Prisons will return funds that do not have appropriate inmate information provided the envelope you sent it in has a valid return address. Checks and cash won’t be accepted so do not send checks or cash.
