Inmate Money

Every state prison has a Commissary which was started to provide prisoners a bank-like account for inmate monies and for buying things not issued regularly by the Bureau of Prisons.

How to Send an Inmate Money

Family, friends, or other sources can send money to inmate’s Commissary accounts by sending it by the U.S. Postal Service and Western Union.

Via U.S. Postal Service: Inmates’ families and friends are able to send prisoners funds by way of the postal service and will have to send money to the address below and do so in accordance with the directions listed below:

The funds have to be in a money order made out to the prisoner’s full committed name and complete eight-digit register number. It is advisable to use a postal money order, since all non-postal money orders processed through the National Lockbox will be placed on a 15-day hold period, in which the prisoner will not have access to the funds. The Bureau of Prisons will send back funds that don’t have appropriate inmate info if the envelope you sent it in has a valid return address. Cash and checks can’t be deposited to the prisoner’s account so don’t send checks or cash.
