Inmate Money

Each state correctional institution has a Commissary which serves to provide inmates a bank type account for prisoner funds and for buying items not issued by the correctional facility.

How to Send an Inmate Money

Friends, family, or other people may add money into these accounts with Western Union or by mail.

Via U.S. Postal Service: An inmate’s family and friends are able to send prisoners money in the postal service and must send those funds to the following address and do so in accordance with the policies provided below:

The funds must be in the form of a money order that is made out to the inmate’s full committed name and complete eight-digit register number. You should use a U.S. Postal Service money order, since all non-postal money orders processed through the National Lockbox will be subject to a 15-day hold period, during which the inmate will not get the funds. The Bureau of Prisons will return to the sender money orders that don’t have appropriate prisoner information provided the envelope you sent it in has a valid return address. Checks and cash won’t be deposited to the inmate’s account so do not send cash or checks.

  1. Kelly R. says:

My brother has been a inmate there since 2003. He was sentence to life. He has been a model prisoner for many years. He had been moved to housing and had been working outside of prison for over 10 years. The last year he has been having bad headaches and a lot of other health issues. it has really been hard on him, but he kept going. Through repeated calls we finally got to see a specialist. He was put on meds to try to stop the severs headaches wit little results. He was put on the drug Topamax and has been sick since. He started off with one and was increased to 3 times a day. Since then has developed many side effects. Ended up getting into it with a guard and was sent to the hole and is still there. It was a verbal disagreement and now has been strip off his housing and his job, both he ha had over ten years, my question is how can you blame him and not help him when if you look up the side effects it should be no surprise. I an in the medical field and have seen people react to this drug and have a hard time with it and bad side effects from it. Instead of trying to help him figure out why his behavior changed, you punish him. My brothr has been sick for a long time and little has been done, always reasons why it can’t be done but no change. Todd is not a bad person and has tried to be a model prisoner, but being sick and on drugs that your system can’t handle does change you. Not all the time guards are perfect. Always the prisoner fault. My brother has been sick a long time, even the nurses have notice a change in him but no one will listen, just punish him. I will not give up trying to help him and now looking for resourses to file a complaint, will not stop. You already got him for life, why put him through this when clearly read his file, those actions were not his, its the drugs you all put him on. jus because your in charge doesn’t mean your always right. I also pray that you never go trough anything difficult because God will ask you why you punish a man for something clearly he couldn’t control with your power and now you want me to bless you. Think about your actions when it comes to others. Just because they are prisoners doesn’t mean they are bad people and deserve to be taken care of like you and me.
