Inmate Money

Each state correctional institution has a Commissary that serves to provide inmates a bank-like account for inmate money and for buying things not issued regularly by the prison.

How to Send an Inmate Money

Family, friends, or other sources may send money into these Commissary accounts using the U.S. Postal Service and Western Union.

Via U.S. Postal Service: Inmates’ families and friends can to send inmates money in the postal service and must send it to the following address and follow the policies provided below:

The deposit have to be in the form of a money order made out to the inmate’s full committed name and complete eight-digit register number. It is advisable to use a post office money order, since all non-postal money orders that are processed through the National Lockbox will be held for a 15-day holding period, during which the prisoner will not get the depsoit. The Bureau of Prisons will send back money orders that don’t have valid prisoner information provided the envelope has a valid return address. Checks and cash cannot be deposited so do not send cash or checks.

Visitation Sign-In and Check-In

The front entrance officer will make sure each visitor signs the prisoner visitors log before they enter the correctional facility and also when they leave.

Identification Required

Photo id of visitors will be required. Appropriate forms of id are Driver’s License and Social Security Card; however, a state picture ID is OK.

Inmate Programs

Current vocational programs are auto mechanics/auto shop, computer and dry cleaning. Educational services are conducted by Carson School District staff and include high school diploma, GED, Literacy programs and English as a Second Language. College courses are available and are provided through Western Nevada Community College. OASIS is a 9 to 12 month drug and alcohol rehabilitation program which contains 170 inmate participants. SSLP (Senior Structured Living Program) is available to those inmates 60 and over and has 120 inmates participating. The New Beginnings program is offered to prepare inmates for reintegration into society. A wide range of self-help and treatment programs are available and are administered by medical, mental health and program staff.

Victim’s Rights

The Victim Rights Act grants victims the following rights:

  • You have the right to protection from the accused.
  • You have the right to notification.
  • You have the right to attend proceedings.
  • You have the right to speak at criminal justice proceedings.
  • You have the right to consult with the prosecuting attorney.
  • You have the right to restitution.
  • You have the right to a speedy trial.
  • You have the right to be treated with fairness, dignity and respect.

The definition of victim includes:

  • Spouses and children of all victims.
  • Parents and guardians of minor victims.
  • Parents, guardians and siblings of mentally or physically incapacitated victims or victims of homicide.
  • Foster parents or other caregivers, under certain circumstances.

There are a number of services and programs designed to help victims and their families. You can find out about these services by contacting the courthouse, or local law enforcement agency.

Victim Notification

The Department of Justice Victim Notification System (VNS) is a system that provides victims with information pertaining to their case and/or any defendants in the case. You will receive a Victim Identification Number (VIN) and a Personal Identification Number (PIN) that will allow you to access VNS via the internet or by phone. Here, you will find information about future court hearings, historical court events, and detailed information about the defendant. This will include criminal charges filed, the outcome of charges, sentence imposed, custody location, projected release date and any other release information. The VNS website is updated daily. You will also receive any ongoing information by mail or email.
