Inmate Money

Every state prison has a Commissary that was created to provide prisoners a bank type account for inmate money and for purchasing things not issued regularly by the facility.

How to Send an Inmate Money

Friends, family, or other people may add funds to these accounts with the U.S. Postal Service and Western Union.

Via U.S. Postal Service: An inmate’s family and friends can to send inmates money in the postal service and have to send funds to this address and follow the rules given below:

The funds have to be a money order that is made out to the inmate’s full committed name and complete eight-digit register number. It is advisable to use a postal money order, since all non-postal money orders that are processed through the National Lockbox will be subject to a 15-day hold, in which the prisoner will not have access to the funds. The Bureau of Prisons will send back money orders that do not have valid inmate info but only if the envelope you sent it in has a valid return address. Checks and cash cannot be deposited to the inmate’s account so don’t send any cash or checks.

Inmate Visitation

Before you go to visit an inmate at Southern Desert, be sure that you know the following information:

Inmate Visitation Schedule

Special Visits–Are immediate family members only and may occur up to four times and only if:
That family member has yet to be added to the inmates Visiting List.
Visitor is arriving from Out-of-State (or 3hrs. or more from the facility)
Inmates are only allowed to visit one time during each a.m./p.m. session (unless a Special Visit has been approved)
Morning check in: 6:30 am to 9:00 am – Afternoon check in: 12:00 pm to 2:00 pm – Visiting ends at 3:00 pm
All General Population Units:

Friday, Saturday, Sunday – 7:00 am to 10:30 am & 12:00 pm to 3:00 pm
Administrative & Disciplinary Segregation:

1st Monday of every month – 6:30 am to 10:30 am and 12:00 pm to 1:30 pm

Inmate Visitor Procedures

Visitation Sign-In and Check-In

The front entrance guard ensures every visitor signs the prisoner visitors log before they enter the prison and upon leaving.

Identification Required

Photo ID of visitors is required. Acceptable forms of ID are Driver’s License and Social Security Card; although, a state photo id is OK.

Inmate Programs

Southern Desert Correctional Center offers a wide range of programs for all of the inmate population and an opportunity to enroll in educational classes in pursuit of a GED, High School Diploma or College Degrees. Southern Desert offers the most programs of any of the facilities located in Nevada, to include: Anger Management, Stress Management, Fitness and Wellness, Inside/Out Dads, Domestic Violence, Communications, Toastmasters, Gang Awareness, Addiction Prevention Education, Conflict Resolution, Victim Empathy, Commitment to Change, SOS Help for Emotions, Thinking for Change, Project Metamorphosis, relationships, Sex offender Treatment Stress and Anxiety management. Additionally, Southern Desert offers “New Beginnings” a re-entry, Horticulture and Pesticide Application in cooperation with University of Nevada – Las Vegas and Forklift Certification and OSHA Certification in cooperation with the local Teamsters Union. SDCC offers “OASIS” a therapeutic community and “LEaP” an intensive programming unit. Religious services and activities for all denominations are available, and the “7 course Meal for the Soul Program” was recently added.
Southern Desert also has its own medical and mental health staff serving the inmate population.

Victim’s Rights

The Victim Rights Act grants victims the following rights:

  • Victims have the right to protection from the accused.
  • Victims have the right to notification.
  • Victims have the right to attend proceedings.
  • Victims have the right to speak at criminal justice proceedings.
  • Victims have the right to consult with the prosecuting attorney.
  • Victims have the right to restitution.
  • Victims have the right to a speedy trial.
  • Victims have the right to be treated with fairness, dignity and respect.

The definition of victim includes:

  • Spouses and children of all victims.
  • Parents and guardians of minor victims.
  • Parents, guardians and siblings of mentally or physically incapacitated victims or victims of homicide.
  • Foster parents or other caregivers, under certain circumstances.

There are a number of services and programs designed to help victims and their families. You can find out about these services by contacting the courthouse, or local law enforcement agency.

Victim Notification

The Department of Justice Victim Notification System (VNS) is a system that provides victims with information pertaining to their case and/or any defendants in the case. You will receive a Victim Identification Number (VIN) and a Personal Identification Number (PIN) that will allow you to access VNS via the internet or by phone. Here, you will find information about future court hearings, historical court events, and detailed information about the defendant. This will include criminal charges filed, the outcome of charges, sentence imposed, custody location, projected release date and any other release information. The VNS website is updated daily. You will also receive any ongoing information by mail or email.
